滋賀県土山町の旧東海道沿いに工房を構え、毎日木と向き合う小倉広太郎さん。
毎月行われるセリに出向き、数百本の木を見て直感的に作りたいものをつくります。
彼の作品を見ると木そのものの素材感をむき出しにしている表現によって、素朴で荒々しい造形の中にも、一つ一つからは古代から静かに呼吸をしているような自然信仰のかたちが見て取れます。
その背景にある彼の思想には、小さな頃からずっと目にしている、庭にたつ小さな鳥居。
裏山にある神社を守るように植えられた大きな杉の木。
幾人もの旅人を癒したであろう小さな川。多くの人たちが思い思いに行き来した旧街道…。
そういったことが今彼の作るモノには映し出されているように感じます。
Kōtarō Ogura has his studio along the old Tōkaidō Road in Tsuchiyama, Shiga Prefecture, where he faces wood every day.
Each month, he visits wood auctions, where he encounters hundreds of trees. Guided by intuition, he selects the wood that speaks to him and creates whatever he feels compelled to make.
In his work, the raw character of the wood itself is left exposed. Within his simple, rugged forms, one can sense a quiet expression of an ancient reverence for nature—as if each piece has been breathing silently since long before our time.
Behind his work lies a landscape he has known since childhood: a small torii standing in the garden; great cedar trees planted around the shrine in the mountain behind his home, as though protecting it; a small stream that may have brought comfort to countless travelers; and the old road along which so many people once came and went, each carrying their own thoughts and stories.
I feel that all of these things—the landscape, memories, and the passage of time—are quietly reflected in the objects he creates today.
