ある時から、仕事場に残った木の粉を篩（ふるい）にかけ、保管するようになった。その粉と灰、煤を堆積させた平面作品を数年前から作っている。
木工の仕事では、木目からその木の歴史を紐解き、あるべきものを導き出す。そのイメージにどれだけ肉薄できるかが勝負だ。一方、粉を使った平面を作る場合は、正反対のアプローチを要する。完成形のイメージは無く、手探りで、自身の直感に従い、積み重ねてはまた削るを繰り返す。まるで、自分が試されているかの様に。
すると、稀に「大きなもの」が姿を現すことがある。それは、「時間」「生命」「自然」に近いものだが、はっきりとまだ分からない。一体、それが何であるのかをもっと知りたい、という衝動は、私が作り続ける理由となっているだろう。

At a certain point, I began sifting and preserving the wood dust left behind in my workshop. For the past several years, I have been creating two-dimensional works by layering this dust together with ash and soot.
In my woodworking practice, I trace the history of a tree through its grain, seeking to uncover what the wood itself calls for. The challenge lies in how closely I can approach that image.
Creating two-dimensional works with wood dust, however, requires an entirely opposite approach. There is no predetermined image of the finished work. I work by touch and intuition, following my instincts, layering and then scraping away, over and over again. It is almost as if I am the one being tested.
And then, on rare occasions, something “larger” begins to emerge.
It seems to be something close to “time,” “life,” or “nature,” yet I still cannot clearly define what it is. The desire to know more—to understand what, exactly, this “something” might be—may be the reason I continue to make.

1979年生まれ。京都精華大学で建築を学んだ後、飛騨、京都で修業を積み、2007年に独立。作家活動として盆や家具、茶道具などを制作する一方で、日本の森の在り方や、木や自然のことをもっと多くの人と共有するための取り組みも行う。2016年よりライフスタイルブランド「SOMA」をスタートさせ、これは日本古来の木とともに暮らす文化を現代に取り入れ、森林問題の解決の糸口を探ろうという活動に通じている。
Born in 1979, he studied architecture at Kyoto Seika University, then trained in Hida and Kyoto before going independent in 2007. While working as an artist, he creates trays, furniture, tea ceremony utensils, and other items, he also works to share the state of Japan's forests, trees, and nature with more people. In 2016, he launched the lifestyle brand "SOMA," which incorporates Japan's ancient culture of living with trees into the modern world, and is linked to activities to find clues to solving forestry issues.
