"Phenomenon" refers to the existence of "me" as something that continuously shifts and changes eternally within space and time. Kuronuma Takatoshi's sculptures affirm human solitude and stand at the boundaries between opposing forces, such as "life and death," "light and darkness," and "self and reality." They also serve as representations that aim to recognize the existence of "me." When looking at his sculptures, one is liberated from both the maker's intention and one's own perspective, eventually forgetting whether it is I who am observing or the sculpture that is observing me. Through this ever-shifting existence of "me," the sculptures question the nature of humanity, nature, and society.

After graduating from school, Kuronuma Takatoshi joined an architecture firm. However, he soon felt a deep sense of discomfort with the repetitive nature of the work, which involved reviewing similar drawings every day. At the age of 23, he began to feel a growing impulse to take leftover wood from the construction site where he worked, eventually starting to carve it in his room. In 2010, he decided to pursue a career as a wood sculptor. Through self-study and experimentation, he held his first solo exhibition in 2011. Initially, he focused on creating functional items, such as cutlery, but gradually began carving animals and human figures̶ a shift that marked the emergence of his identity as a sculptor. Currently, his work consists of three main bodies of work. The first involves creating sculptures of people, animals, and buildings, carved from blocks of camphor wood. The second explores the strength, expression, and aging of driftwood, which he interprets to create animal sculptures that reflect these qualities. The third is a series of clay works that represent his present sense of self. Each of these works features highly realistic expressions and bone structures, so lifelike that they seem ready to move. Yet, they also leave space for contemplation, a space that gradually leads to a realization of oneʼs own existence and an awareness of the presence of others. In his work, Kuronuma Takatoshi gives form to the fundamental sadness of existence and presents it as beauty. This catalog serves as a record of Kuronuma Takatoshi's first exhibition in a public space-a museum. What kind of "phenomenon" will his "figures" reveal to us? The significance of this catalog, and the act of documenting it, lies in how the "phenomena" captured through each individual perspective will evolve from the starting point of this exhibition. It seems to me that this is also something the artist himself hopes for.
